Tanker exiting the lock, our crew would be heading fore and aft to tend the lines, pick up the man ashore letting the lines go and then moving into the lock where line handlers tended our wires. It was common practice to work 4 hours on, 4 hours on call and 4 hours off in the seaway and canal. It was the only way to get any sleep as at least you got 4 hours in 12 in bed. If you were lucky you might get the 4 hours on call without a call. If unlucky you did 8 on 4 off then 8 on and 4 off in a day.
