Welland Canal that allows ships to climb from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. The three continuous locks that climb up the escarpment where the Niagara Falls are called the Flight Locks. There are two sets of three locks, one for up bound traffic and one for down bound traffic. The above photograph is from the top lock looking back down the hill. The lock behind has been run down to allow the gate to open and for the next ship to enter.
