1969. Although we did not know it then this was the last time he MARGARET BOWATER was to be in Corner Brook under Bowater colours. A hand painted sign appeared by the gangway advertising the ship for sale even with the officials denying that was going to happen. I was held (partly) responsible for the sign as in part it read “sails in exelent (sic) condition,’ the spelling mistake was accredited to me. On arrival in the UK soon after the possibility of any sale was still denied even though the sale of both the MARGARET and the SARAH had been announced in Lloyd’s list. It was amazing how the galley radio could pick up the signals long before any official word came down. The figure passing the sign is the chief officer Louis Bartrip.
